Cut seedlings of wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Starke II Weibull) between 6 and 7 days old were water stressed in darkness by exposing them to air of 35% relative humidity 2.5 to 20 h. This treatment resulted in a water potential of -11 bars in the leaves after 20 h. The leaves were then rewatered and irradiated. The chlorophyll formation that took place in fully turgid leaves during the greening was markedly decreased in the case of the water-stress pretreatmet. and especially the lag phase was prolonged. The longer the stress pretreatment the more evident was the subsequent effect on chlorophyll formation. However, no linear relationship was found between the amount of stress and the chlorophyll content. Protochlorophyllide regeneration from endogenously formed δ-aminolevulinic acid was markedly decreased even after the shortest water-stress period. However, protochlorophyllide accumulation from exogenously supplied δ-aminolevulinic acid was only slightly decreased following the water-stress pretreatment. Further more, the ratio of protochlorophyllide650 to protochlorophyllide628 was slightly reduced by the same conditions. During the stress period both abscisic acid and proline were accumulated in the leaves. The content of abscisic acid increased up to six times the normal level during water stress lasting for 20 h. The increase of proline was about three-fold for similar treatment. After rewatering the leaves the levels of both abscisic acid and proline rapidly declined and reached. 10 h later, the levels found in unstressed seedlings. The increase in abscisic acid during water stress associated with impaired chlorophyll metabolism suggested that the after-effect of water stress might be linked to chlorophyll metabolism through abscisic acid or some of its metabolites. The changes in proline content open the possibility that this substance could function as a reserve substance for the formation of chlorophyll after the discon tinuation of the stress.  相似文献

Rhabdotubus johanssoni n.gen., n.sp., is described from the early Middle Cambrian Eccaparadoxides pinus Zone of Närke, southern Sweden. The colonies encrusted shells of inarticulate brachiopods, and occasionally trilobites, on otherwise soft substrates. The tubarium consists of repent and erect tubes. The former branch irregularly and produce a thecorhiza-like structure; the latter are erect and mostly isolated, up to 10 mm in length and widening gradually to about 1 mm width. Both repent and erect tubes are composed of fusellar bands, mostly irregularly arranged. Branching of repent tubes takes place through resorption or perforation of fusellar tissue in the parent tube. Branching of erect tubes occurs sporadically. There is no thecal dimorphism. No sclerotized stolon is present. Rhabdotubus is interpreted as the earnest known rhabdopleurid (Class Pterobranchia, Phylum Hemichordata). In general habitus it is similar to sessile graptolites of the Order Tuboidea. These similarities may well have phylogenetic significance, but further knowledge of the Tuboidea and other sessile orders of the Graptolithina is required to clarify the early evolution of graptolites.  相似文献

Isolated stem segments of Pinus silvestris L. produce new xylem in sterile culture for 5 weeks if sucrose and IAA are present in the medium. The response of cambium varies in the course of the season and along the tree stem. The cambium is more sensitive in spring and in the stem portion closer to tree apex than later in the season and closer to the stem base. Spring initiation of cambial activity in adult pine trees under natural conditions could not be correlated with any consistent concentration gradient of natural auxin extracted from the cambial region. Thus, the relation between concentration of auxin and the activity of cambium is complex and involves changes of cambial responsivity. Interaction with gibberellic acid or kinetin and changing concentration of sucrose were studied during the season, but none of these substances alone appeared to be responsible for the observed variation in cambial response to auxin.  相似文献

It seems increasingly clear that insulin is a hormone that doesnot occur exclusively in vertebrates. Several independent reportsnow exist giving evidence of insulin production in the digestivetissues of both deuterostomian and protostomian invertebrates.Cells with some light-microscopical and ultrastructural characteristicsof vertebrate B-cells have also been observed. Recently, evidencehas been obtained that insulin can act as a hypoglycemic hormone,promoting glycogen synthesis, also in a protostomian invertebrate,the gastropod mollusc, Strophocheilus oblongus. The endocrine pancreas of the cyclostomes occupies a key positionin the comparative endocrinology of the islet parenchyma andin the evolution of insulin production. It may represent anevolutionary link between the presumably gut-connected dispersedinsulin-producing cells of deuterostomian invertebrates andthe pancreatic islets of gnathostomian vertebrates. This hypothesiswas supported by the fact that cells with light-microscopicaland ultrastructural similarities to the islet B-cells were observedin the bile duct mucosa of the hagfish, Myxine glutinosa. However,immunofluorescent studies with antisera against human insulinand C-peptide did not show any immunoreactive material outsidethe B-cells of the endocrine pancreas. Particular attentionwas paid to elucidate the biological significance of the largecystic cavities that are so typical for the cyclostomian isletparenchyma. The working hypothesis that they may contain storedinsulin, proinsulin (or even "proto-proinsulin") was not supportedby immunofluorescence, autoradiographic, or ultrastructuralinvestigations, nor by proinsulin assays. It is possible thathagfish islet B-cells contain zinc, despite the fact that theamino acid residue in B10-position is aspartic acid insteadof histidine. The biosynthesis of hagfish insulin shows a patternsimilar to that in gnathostomes. Its rate is related to theambient temperature and at 11 C the conversion of proinsulinto insulin lasts several days.  相似文献

Floral scent of bat-pollinated species: West Africa vs. the New World   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Floral scent of seven West African bat-pollinated tree species, belonging to six families, was collected in situ from flowering individuals using headspace adsorption. The seven species shared neither any specific compounds nor any other discernible pattern in their floral scent composition. Most of the identified compounds are common in the floral scent of species pollinated by a variety of animals. Adansonia digitata (Bombacaceae) was the only African species found to have a substantial proportion of sulphur compounds in its floral scent. This feature contrasts with the sampled New World bat-pollinated plants, which frequently contain these compounds. The floral scent of Ceiba pentandra (Bombacaceae), native to both South America and Africa, contained no sulphur substances, contradicting a previous study in the New World that identified the major floral compounds as dimethyl disulphide and dimethyl trisulphide. We suggest that the differences in the floral scent of C. pentandra , including the absence of sulphur compounds in the African variety, result from the different selective regimes exerted by the Pteropotidae bats, in Africa, and Phyllostomidae bats, in the New World, that visit their flowers.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 161–168.  相似文献

Abstract: Large carnivores potentially change their behavior following physical capture, becoming less responsive to the attractants that resulted in their capture, which can bias population estimates where the change in behavior is not appropriately modeled. We applied occupancy models to efficiently estimate and compare detection probabilities of previously collared grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) with bears captured at DNA hair-snag sites that were not previously collared. We found that previously captured bears had lower detection probabilities, although their detection probabilities were still >0, implying that they were still visible to be sampled via the DNA hair-snag grid, which was able to detect finer differences in capture probabilities of previously collared bears compared with Huggins closed-captures population models. To obtain relatively unbiased population estimates for DNA surveys, heterogeneity caused by previous live capture should be accounted for in the population estimator.
